Emotional Harm

NSCPCourse Aim

To raise awareness and effectively equip practitioners with information from research and practice evidence to identify signs and symptoms of emotional harm and the impact on children.

Learning Outcome

By the end of this course participants should be able:

  • To understand the concept of significant harm as identified in Working Together 2018.
  • To be able to identify the signs and symptoms of emotional harm.
  • To understand the feelings of children who are experiencing or have experienced  emotional harm.
  • To use a theoretical model of developmental stages of emotional abuse.
  • To use tools provided to understand childhood resilience and consider how this can be developed in children and young people.
  • To apply frameworks for the assessment of parental capacity to change

Target Staff

Those who work regularly with children and young people and adults who are parents or carers and may be asked to contribute to assessment of children in need (Group 3) and those with a particular responsibility for safeguarding children (Group 4).
