Restrictive Practice

Training AssessmentStrategies and interventions to reduce the use of restrictive practices in organisational culture and to ensure any restrictive intervention is legally and ethically justified; to inform professional practice and identify positive behaviour support.

This course maps to the DOH framework for a ‘Positive and Proactive Workforce’;It identifies and defines ‘restrictive practices’ including discussion and group work looking at strategies and interventions to reduce the use of restrictive practices in health and social care services.

This course aims to assist your organisation to comply with the Health and Social Care Act, regulated activity 12, ‘Safe Care and Treatment’, CQC monitors and inspects against the guidance ‘Positive and Proactive Care’ reducing the need for restrictive intervention.

Course Objectives

  • To define ‘Restrictive Practices’ and ‘Restrictive Interventions’ – and the differences 
  • To examine examples and case studies of restrictive practices and discuss/ identify possible non-restrictive alternatives 
  • To revisit the MCA & DoLS 5 principles and how they link to restrictive practice 
  • To provide opportunity to inform professional practice and identify positive behaviour support. 
  • To discuss the key points for organisations to ensure that any restrictive practice or intervention is legally and ethically justifiable and underpinned by the key principles within the DoH guidance (mapped to the DoH ‘8 overarching principles’) 
  • To understand the importance of developing organisational policy and procedure to provide a framework to which person-centred care and support may be given whilst minimising restrictive practices.
