Understanding Children and Young People who Engage in Sexually Harmful Behaviour

  • Those who work regularly with children and young people and adults who are parents or carers and may be asked to contribute to assessment of children in need (Group 3) and those with a particular responsibility for safeguarding children (Group 4).

  • Staff who may take part in a multi-agency response to children who sexually harm.

Course Duration: One day

Course Aim: To enhance participants knowledge and skills in working effectively with children and young people who present a risk to others by their sexualised behaviour

Learning Outcomes - By the end of this course participants should:

  • Understand agency and individual responsibilities and single and multi-agency processes in child on child sexual abuse
  • Understand and identify indicators of risk and signs and the impact of sexualised behaviours
  • Understand what is healthy sexual exploration or experimentation in children and young people
  • Have developed their knowledge and understanding of what current research tells us about sexually abusive behaviour by children and young people
  • Understand current assessment and intervention models in child on child, including sibling, sexual abuse
  • Understand the importance of multi-agency responses to child on child sexual abuse
  • Understand the importance of working with the parents/carers of children and young people who sexually abuse
  • Be able to contribute to risk assessments of children and young people who sexually abuse
  • Know how to respond to sibling victims of sexually harmful behaviour
  • Be able to contribute to managing the risk when there is reunification into the family of children and young people who sexually abuse their siblings
  • Understand when practitioners need to take further advice
  • Have considered their own values and beliefs in relation to what constitutes sexual behaviour by young people
