DBS Checks

Please be aware that during the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic all Voluntary Norfolk and Momentum staff are working from home.  We are all adjusting to the impact that this will have on the processing of DBS applications, particularly paper applications, so please see below for interim guidance.  In the meantime, please bear with us.  We will need to ensure that we prioritise our efforts into ensuring that essential services at this difficult time are able to run safely.

Contacting Us

We are now reliant on communication via email.  This also allows us to prioritise how we respond to requests.  Please email us if you have any questions about existing or future applications.

Paper-based Applications

For customers who have been reliant on paper-based applications we will support you to move to our online platform for DBS checks.  Please note, we have temporarily waived the set-up fee required for online applications in order to help groups access the online service.  We will prioritise requests for help to ensure those organisations needing DBS checks as part of their Covid-19 response are supported first.

We are aware that we have a back-log in respect of paper based applications that have been sent to us in the past week and we are taking steps to resolve this, but there are likely to be significant delays on any outstanding paper based applications or documents sent for checking.   If you wish to cancel your outstanding applications and start them as online applications then please let us know.

Evidence Checking

The DBS service has updated its guidance regarding checking evidence online for standard and enhanced checks. See https://www.gov.uk/government/news/covid-19-changes-to-standard-and-enhanced-id-checking-guidelines  We will provide you with a clear process of how to do this and what you need to have in place early next week.

What are DBSs?

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) helps employers make safer recruitment decisions and prevent unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups, including children. It replaces the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA).

A DBS check is a report from the police which details any and all entries the police have on their system for you. This is just a formality for most people and is purely a precautionary measure to ensure children and young people are safe on their activities. The search is for relevant records, so, for instance, there is no need to worry if you want to work with children but have a speeding ticket!

Momentum is an umbrella organisation with the Disclosure Barring Service allowing small organisations to undertake DBS applications for the staff and volunteers through us. Members have a reduction in the costs of DBS applications. No minimum number of applications required.

NB: We carry out DBS checks for Child Workforce. For Adult Workforce, please contact CBR Business Solutions.

Becoming an Evidence Checker

Organisations acting as an evidence checker on behalf of Momentum (Norfolk) must have attended our DBS Evidence Checking course. Momentum (Norfolk) will no longer be allowed to accept DBS forms from those who have not attended.

If you are interested in becoming an Evidence Checker for your group / organisation, book your place on one of the workshops in our Training Hub.

DBS update service

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) update service lets applicants keep their DBS certificates up to date online and allows employers to check a certificate online. Registration lasts for 1 year and is free for volunteer positions and £13 per year for paid positions (payable by debit or credit card only).
