Understanding Disability: Community Groups for All

Together, we will work through and discuss the main issues faced by young people with disabilities when thinking about attending a youth club or community group. Understanding what you will need to consider to make your club welcoming and inclusive. We will discuss the importance of communication; including common communication issues, acceptable and appropriate language, and the role of the media; how it shapes our understanding of disability.

On completing this course we would like you to go away with practical tips on how to be more inclusive including information on further support available. More importantly how making your club more inclusive benefits everyone!

Aims & Objectives

After studying this course we would like you to go away with:

  • An overview of the issues faced by young people with disabilities.
  • An understanding of the things youth clubs need to consider to make their group welcoming, accessible and inclusive for young people with disabilities.
  • An understanding of communication issues.
  • Practical tips for groups on how to be inclusive.
  • Knowledge of appropriate and acceptable language.
  • Media perception of disability and how this shapes our understanding.
  • Information about further support available.
