Introduction to Youth Participation

This half-day course will give participants with an excellent understanding of the key principles of youth participation and co-production methodology. The course will provide practical ideas on how to develop genuine youth participation processes. Genuine youth participation has an exceptionally powerful impact on the impact of youth organisations and the future shape of the sector.

Aims and Objectives

  • Understand what is meant by young people’s participation and empowerment
  • Understand what is meant by ‘co-production’ and its positive impact in work with young people.
  • Apply effective participation principles to your youth work setting

  • Youth workers, youth support workers and community development workers who are new to the topic of youth participation
  • Volunteers in youth settings who want to understand more about youth work practice
  • Managers and project leaders in youth work settings who want to embed youth participation into their projects

About the Trainer

Simon Pickering has been working in the Children’s and Youth Sector for over 20 years, in a range of statutory and voluntary organisations. Simon’s career began working with disadvantaged young people in Brixton, London. Between 2007 and 2015 he has worked in Suffolk heading up youth participation for a local authority. In late 2015 Simon founded Dot to Dot Training & Consulting providing a range of training, youth work, fundraising and consultancy services including grant assessment work for BBC Children in Need. Dot to Dot Training & Consulting have worked with over 50 organisations in a consultancy capacity and over 200 organisations have participated workshops and training.
